What is HVAC?

Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) is one of the primary functions found in homes, offices, and business structures. HVAC is sometimes called as climate control. It is vital in the design of medium to large office and industrial buildings and in marine surroundings such as aquariums, where temperature and humidity should regulated closely while maintaining healthy and safe conditions within. Its functions are important in maintaining comfort in every dwelling.

HVAC is used primarily to regulate air flow, room temperature, and humidity so that such elements stay within their acceptable ranges. Controlling such factors effectively reduces health-related risks.

The origin of HVAC is not clear. However, as early as second century, many Roman cities were utilizing a central heating system called hypocaust. It was further popularized during the Industrial Revolution because big factories utilized it. Currently, many modern buildings have integrated HVAC.

The three functions of HVAC are heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Heating is significant in maintaining proper room temperature especially during colder weather conditions. Heating can be provided from electric, or resistance heating using a filament that becomes hot when electricity is caused to pass through it. On the other hand, ventilation is related to air movement. There are many kinds of ventilation, but they all function similarly. Ventilation is needed to enable carbon dioxide to go out and oxygen to get in, ensuring that people are inhaling fresh air.  The air-conditioning system controls the heat and ventilation and they usually come in different sizes.

What about temporary HVAC?

We use HVAC systems in our everyday lives, both at work and at home. These units assist in regulating the temperatures at home and at work, so that we always feel comfortable. It’s difficult to imagine what life was like before HVAC systems were created.

When system goes down or is not capable enough to handle your need, you will have to use a temporary HVAC unit. Temporary HVAC units can fill in the gaps until permanent solutions for your HVAC needs are found. Larger companies keep a temporary HVAC system on hand for emergency cases.

Temporary HVAC is very common and has many uses. It is primarily utilized for heating or cooling a particular place and is also used during extreme weather conditions. In other cases, it is the only way to make it possible to continue to work. An example of such case would be a crewman working in a tunnel. The temperatures can be so high, so OSHO mandates the use of temporary HVACs to cool the place down.

Temporary HVAC can also be used in critical life-saving situations. A little girl in west Texas slipped into a well hole and was lodged there for days, as workers tried one method after another to save the trapped girl. The rescuers pushed a hose down as close to her as possible to pump in fresh air. This use of temporary HVAC rescued the little girl.

Temporary HVAC systems come in handy in most situations. It is used throughout the country in hospitals, schools, offices, industries and homes for taking care of one’s temporary heating or cooling needs. Hospitals may also need it to continue giving critical health-care emergency services during natural disasters. Schools might need heating solutions in those cold winter months or cooling solutions during the summer months. Homeowners might need them when their house has been flooded and offices might need to use them for special outdoor events.

Everyone needs a good heating ventilation and cooling. A breakdown of one’s HVAC can lead to big losses for businesses and the industrial sector. In such situations, a professional contractor can instantly arrange for the installation of a temporary HVAC.

Types of temporary HVAC units

Temporary HVACs have manifold uses. Many temporary HVAC products are available for rental or for purchasing. However, there are many factors which need to be considered in renting or purchasing temporary HVAC unit and using them safely. You need to check out various temporary service providers to find out who understands your temporary HVAC needs the best and who can provide you with the best solutions. Try visiting at least 3 to 4 service providers if you are thinking of renting a HVAC unit. Make sure to ask each HVAC service provider for references. Follow up also on these references to find out if any of these customers had any problems with the service provider. If there were any problems, probe the reasons for the issues and find out whether the service provider was able to resolve them or not.

One type of temporary HVAC unit is the one that can be applied to medical centers or hospitals. If the cooling or heating requirements are for a medical center or hospital, the temporary HVAC unit that will be used must be able to handle the cooling and heating needs throughout the hospital. The IAQ or Indoor Air Quality is so vital in a hospital setting. An experienced and qualified contractor will be able to determine these factors but make sure you specify to the service provider that infection control is very important.

Another type of temporary HVAC unit is the one required for an educational setting. The requirements or this setting will be different. Although Indoor Air Quality is needed in every setting, the requirements will be more towards protecting the students from extreme heat or extreme cold weather. This will enable the students and teachers to continue with their lessons without any interruptions.

There’s also the type of temporary HVAC unit that are applicable for an event. Make sure to specify the amount of days or hours that the event will go on. Also specify the setting where the event is going to take place. If it is an indoor setting, the HVAC equipment would be different than if the event is being organized in an outdoor setting. If you need cooling solutions for the event, it will also change depending on the area. An experienced HVAC contractor can help you calculate the total area which needs HVAC and suggest the right device for it. You do not want too less heating or too much cooling at the event. For an auditorium, it would be different than it would be for a hall. If there are heat-generating sources present at the event, then more cooling will be used. Cooling requirements will be less if the event is mainly a night time event.

Three of the many types or equipment for temporary HVAC units are chillers, generators, and boilers.

1. Generators.

Some homes and businesses would opt to hire the services of temporary power generators if the power grid is expected to be down for a long period of time, or when uncertainty of the restoration of normal electrical supply is the issue. Temporary power generators are commonly used after a disaster. At the very least, the generators are utilized to provide lighting and for thermo-regulation. Most importantly, the use of emergency power will assist in preserving the food stored in freezers and refrigerators.

Temporary power generators come in different brands, models and capacities. Some can be very small man-portable or car-portable units that provide thousand Watts of electricity. Many are towed units or large trailer units. The typical towed power generators' capacity can range from 10 kilowatts (kW) to over 2000 kW of power. Some can run for over a day at a time while others can run for a few hours only. Most models utilize diesel or gasoline as a fuel source.

Many power generator rental service companies today offer start-to-finish power generation services. These rental services could provide the personnel to run the systems for the duration of the rental, or at the very least, teach the client on the proper operation and safe maintenance of the generators leased. These temporary power providers also deliver and then restore the generators. Some generator rental companies also have client pick-up and return option services.

2. Chillers.

HVAC chillers are refrigeration systems that give cooling for industrial and commercial applications. They use oils, water, or other fluids as refrigerants. HVAC chillers include a condenser, compressor, thermal expansion valve, evaporator, reservoir, and stabilization assembly. Compressing the refrigerant results to a high pressure, superheated gas that the condenser air-cools to a warm liquid. The thermal expansion valve (TXV) releases refrigerant into the evaporator, converting the warm liquid to a dry, cool gas.

HVAC chillers vary in terms of cooling specifications, condenser cooling method, and process pump specifications. There are many condenser cooling methods. Cooling specifications for HVAC chillers include fluid discharge temperature, cooling capacity, and compressor motor horsepower. Usually, cooling capacity is measured in kilowatts or tons of refrigeration.

3. Boilers.

People who utilize boilers for their main source of heat report that they love the kind of heat that a boiler provides, whether they have a steam boiler or hot water boiler. There is wet heat, dry heat, drafty heat, even heat, and uneven heat just to mention a few. It is vital to have good HVAC boiler preventive maintenance practices and regular HVAC boiler system tune-ups including maintenance on boilers. There are many different configurations and combinations for boilers. There are oil boilers and gas boilers and a combination of the two with dual fuel burners. A boiler is a pressure vessel where water is heated so that you will be able to provide heat somewhere for something. There are low pressure boilers and high pressure. There are also hot water boilers and steam boilers.
